Healthy snacks after Christmas

If there’s any time when you should be allowed to indulge yourself, it has to be Christmas. But as we put the turkey, Christmas pudding and chocolate selection boxes behind us, head into the new year and start to think about what we want to change in our lives – even if that doesn’t mean going so far as make New Year’s resolutions – eating more healthily is one thing that regularly tops the list for many people.

That makes it a good time to review your snack selection and support those who want to watch their calories after the Christmas break. Of course, that doesn’t mean you have to totally abandon the crisps and chocolate, just mix things up a bit with healthier alternatives.

Given that, here are some low calorie snacks that you could add to the selection in your workplace or office vending machine:

  • Fruit – fresh fruit, whether whole or in pre-prepared packages can be kept for longer in today’s refrigerated machines than used to be possible.
  • Healthy crisps – crisps don’t have to mean high salt and oil content anymore. There are plenty of healthy alternatives that have far fewer calories but still taste great!
  • Popcorn – not just for watching movies, popcorn is also a surprisingly good choice for those looking to lose weight, with a great combination of being high in fibre and low in calories.
  • Hummus – perhaps supplied complete with carrot, pepper, celery and courgette sticks to dip in.
  • Water – far better for you than carbonated drinks, and if you don’t have a water dispenser, it’s good to make bottled water easily available.
  • Protein drinks – alternatively, protein drinks are shown to be an aid to losing weight when paired with a sensible diet.
  • Trail mix – okay, so the nuts in the average pack of trail mix may have more calories than would be ideal, but they provide essential nutrients that it’s hard to find elsewhere and the combination as a whole is ideal for giving a great energy boost.
