Desk snacks and mid-morning work snacks have always been a topic of discussion when it comes to nutrition in the workplace. You need to strike a delicate balance; you don’t want to eat something that doesn’t satisfy your hunger, but you also don’t want to eat something too filling that puts you off your lunch or – worse – brings about a mid-morning slump. Now so many of us are working from home, there’s suddenly more scope for us to get creative with our work snacks, but what are the best ones? In this article, Nu Vending are going to run through the best snacks for working from home.

Healthy snacks for working from home

While it might be tempting to fill up the treat cupboard and visit it every time we feel a little peckish, this will only bring short-term gratitude with longer-term negative effects. Sugary snacks obviously contribute to weight gain, and when the sugar wears off, we feel the classic ‘slump’ where we feel tired and sluggish at our desks.

Healthy snacks for working from home include:

Savoury oatcakes

These are low in sugar and calories, and they’re available in a range of flavours to suit any taste. A couple of these mid-morning or mid-afternoon and you’ll be nicely satisfied until lunch.

Vegetable sticks

Carrots, celery, cucumber; cut your favourite vegetable into sticks and combine with a healthy dip for a delicious snack. Healthy dips include things like low-fat hummus, tzatziki and guacamole. As tempting as it might be, try not to overload on the dips – too much of them will cancel out their healthy qualities.

Nuts

Nuts are an excellent source of protein, fibre and healthy fats. There’s a wide range of nuts available at any supermarket, so you can either stock up on your favourite type or enjoy a mixture of many.

Apple and peanut butter

A superb but under-appreciated combination, apple slices and peanut butter are the perfect filling snack. The sweet/savoury taste and decent fibre, protein and healthy fat content of peanut butter works brilliantly with sweet apple slices.

Low-calorie breakfast bars

Some cereal bars are surprisingly high in fat and sugar, but there are some fantastic low-calorie alternatives available. Scan the shelves and the packaging to find out the nutritional value of certain cereal bars, and pick up some healthy ones. They’re filling and sweet.

With any snacks, healthy or otherwise, it’s important that you don’t overdo it. Even if you’re snacking on vegetable sticks on their own, if you eat too many mid-morning you won’t feel like eating lunch, which can then lead to a later lunch, which in turn can make you delay your dinner. These snacks are great for keeping you going until your next main meal, so make sure to resist the temptation to over-indulge.

Although many of us are working from home at the moment, we’ll hopefully be back in the office and back to normality in the not-too-distant future. When that happens, it’s important that snacks are readily available, and that’s where Nu Vending can help.
